I have given up.

Yep, gave up. I wrote the DNC the other day, withdrawing my support for the Democratic Party.

Texas BOE approves textbook changes based on anti-gay law

Fri Nov 05, 2004 at 02:41:38 PM PDT

Just saw this on a news site I frequent:

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - The Texas Board of Education approved new health textbooks for the state's high school and middle school students Friday after the publishers agreed to change the wording to depict marriage as the union of a man and a woman.

A Little Good News from a Red County

Thu Nov 04, 2004 at 11:49:35 AM PDT

I wrote my friend Don today to praise him for a well-run, clean campaign and to let him know that I'm still fired up about continuing to bring the Democratic party in our county (Gwinnett Co., northeastern suburbs of Atlanta) out of the shadows and into the light of day.

Don suffered a big defeat (30% to 70%) against the incumbent Republican for the state house seat in our district. However, Don's reply contained some good news and numbers:

My Plan to Retake America

Wed Nov 03, 2004 at 11:12:29 AM PDT

As much and as many times as I've joked (half-joked?) and thought about moving to Canada in the past year, this election has made me think seriously about my future in this country. I am here to state once and for all that I am not going anywhere.

Here's my plan, and I fully intend to follow it. Hopefully a bunch of you will do likewise. (more after the break...)

My Repub Friends Are Not Voting Today!

Tue Nov 02, 2004 at 12:21:32 PM PDT

I'm the sole Democrat at my office (there's at least one Libertarian, but the rest are solid Repubs). I waited in line this morning with my wife and three or four hundred of our closest friends to cast our ballots. The repubs at my office? Can't be bothered. They don't have time to stand in line or don't want to deal with the "aggravation" of it all.

Their mindset is "I'm not happy with Bush, but I sure don't want Kerry either."

Let's hope this is indicative of a larger Repub mindset. I'M certainly not going to encourage them to go vote! :)

My Freeper Friend Makes a Confession

Tue Oct 26, 2004 at 01:40:00 PM PDT

So I just got finished an IM session with a friend of mine who, despite being a really good friend (since like 8th grade), refuses to hear outside opinions and has consumed too much BC04 koolaid.

He did, however, make a shocking confession to me...

Canadian Drug Flip-Flop

Mon Oct 18, 2004 at 08:08:16 AM PDT

My wife asked me to pose this question:

Why is nobody else talking about Bush's flip-flop on Canadian drugs?

Maybe I missed it (and she doesn't read blogs), but after all the talk about "We're not going to import drugs from Canada because we don't know if they're safe," nobody seems to have noticed that Bush said in the last debate regarding flu vaccine, "We're going to import a bunch from Canada."

Did I miss the discussion about this? If not, why hasn't the issue been raised?

My Wife's Minivan Got Keyed

Mon Oct 18, 2004 at 05:17:44 AM PDT

My wife and I are two of what I suspect is a very few Democrats in our county who proudly sport Kerry/Edwards stickers on their vehicles. This past Saturday, my wife and daughter came out of a store to find that the driver's side door had been keyed. Naturally we suspect it was some desperate Rethuglican's work.

We got the last laugh, though: the store that they (and presumably the culprit) came out of? CostCo, a very Democrat-friendly organization with large contributions to the Democratic party, employee unions, etc.

Still... pisses us off, but we're wearing the scratch as a mark of honor. [editor's note, by Bob in Atlanta]Off-topic, but I should also add that I put up our first (and hopefully only) K/E yard sign yesterday, right next to our sign for our Dem state house candidate. There is only one other K/E yard sign in our neighborhood, and at least three BC04 signs.

Fact-Checking the SCLM: Democratic-Sponsored Draft Bill?

Wed Oct 13, 2004 at 04:43:28 AM PDT

This morning on 11Alive in Atlanta, reporter Paul Crawley did a piece on the Senate debate held last night between Democrat Denise Majette, Repub Johnny Isakson, and Libertarian Allen Buckley. Everything was pretty straightforward (one thing I appreciate about 11Alive is that they seem to be the most "fair and balanced" of the local news outlets, at least as far as I can tell...) until Paul wrapped up the story with this tidbit (paraphrased):

"... and all three candidates stated that they would oppose a Democratic-sponsored draft bill."

... Meanwhile, an angry mob ransacks BC04 HQ in Orlando

Wed Oct 06, 2004 at 12:57:49 PM PDT

Apparently, members of the local AFL-CIO aren't too happy about the new overtime pay rules.

I wouldn't be, either, if I were paid overtime. However, I'm not entirely sure this was the best way to demonstrate that displeasure. Between people shooting into BC04 HQ's in Tennessee to things like this, it's not painting a pretty picture for our side.

(Keep going...)

Elect Don McDaniel - GA 97th

Wed Sep 01, 2004 at 09:46:28 AM PDT

I've been volunteering some time doing webmaster duties for Don McDaniel, a Dean Dozen candidate for Georgia's 97th congressional district. The 97th is Republican operative Ralph Reed's home district, and the incumbent representative, Republican Brooks Coleman, has never faced a Democratic opponent.

$8.8 Billion in Iraq Funds Missing

Thu Aug 19, 2004 at 01:05:11 PM PDT

Holy crap!

At least $8.8 billion in Iraqi funds that was given to Iraqi ministries by the former U.S.-led authority there cannot be accounted for, according to a draft U.S. audit set for release soon.

The audit by the Coalition Provisional Authority's own Inspector General blasts the CPA for "not providing adequate stewardship" of at least $8.8 billion from the Development Fund for Iraq that was given to Iraqi ministries.

Wonder if this will show up in the SCLM?

Bush Admits Tax Cuts Widened Deficit

Tue Aug 10, 2004 at 09:01:16 AM PDT

I heard this on NPR's 'Marketplace' show yesterday afternoon. It was just a little blurb before another story, but I found it interesting that (a) he'd admit it, and (b) in light of his "the rich don't pay taxes" 'gaffe,' his explanation of "sovereignty," and other recent misstatements, missteps, and miscommunications, if we are witnessing the unraveling of Fearless Leader.

Hey Shrub: Are We Safe or Not?

Sat Aug 07, 2004 at 08:17:01 AM PDT

So, what I want to know, Mr. Bush, is this: are we safe now or not? We've been hearing you say for months that we are safer, but then today you said that we are still not safe. So which is it?

(With apologies if this has been posted already. I swear I did a diary search, to no avail...)

Don't Like Your Job? Take a Prozac and Get Over It.

Fri Jul 30, 2004 at 07:26:11 AM PDT

This summed up for me the attitude of the Bush Administration (and campaign) about the job situation in our country:

A campaign worker for President Bush said on Thursday American workers unhappy with low-quality jobs should find new ones -- or pop a Prozac to make themselves feel better.

"Why don't they get new jobs if they're unhappy -- or go on Prozac?" said Susan Sheybani, an assistant to Bush campaign spokesman Terry Holt.

Moonie Times Blames it on Clinton

Fri Jun 25, 2004 at 09:17:04 AM PDT

No real surprise here, and yet I'm sitting here shaking my head over this one:

http://www.washtimes.com/national/20040624-112921-3401r.htm

The Clinton administration talked about firm evidence linking Saddam Hussein's regime to Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda network years before President Bush made the same statements.
The issue arose again this month after the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States reported there was no "collaborative relationship" between the old Iraqi regime and bin Laden.

[snip]

One came from William S. Cohen, Mr. Clinton's defense secretary. He cited an al Qaeda-Baghdad link to justify the bombing of a pharmaceutical plant in Sudan.

[snip]

The other pronouncement is contained in a Justice Department indictment on Nov. 4, 1998, charging bin Laden with murder in the bombings of two U.S. embassies in Africa.

Nicely timed, don't you think, to coincide with Clinton's big comeback? And if these are true (which I don't doubt), why are we just hearing about them now?

Southern Baptist Convention Escalates the Liberal Hate

Tue Jun 15, 2004 at 09:42:06 AM PDT

As a reformed / recovering Baptist, I make it a point to keep tabs on the SBC to keep abreast of the hate and intolerance they're spreading.

Today I learned that the SBC is removing itself from the Baptist World Alliance because of the latter's inclusion of a more-liberal group, the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, which the SBC has accused of taking an "anti-Amerkun tone."

It's not too late to draft someone else to run against Bush...

Wed Apr 28, 2004 at 06:59:55 AM PDT

... but who?

James Ridgeway in the Village Voice this morning says, "If things proceed as they are, the dim-bulb Dem leaders are going to be very sorry they screwed Howard Dean." More here.

My friend Nick says, and I agree, "I'd rather have voted for a passionate outsider with barely a chance than a wishywashy lifetime insider like Kerry."

So once again, I'll hold my nose and vote. I don't think Kerry is the lesser of two evils, like many people. I just don't think he's the best we have to offer. Unfortunately, it looks like one way or another, he's what the Dems will be offering. Unless they draft someone else.

But who?
